#1. Question about rear trailing arm and lower wishbone - from Stan Shaw

Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2007 12:10:41 -0400 From: "Stan Shaw" <Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net> Subject: Question about rear trailing arm and lower wishbone While replacing my rear subframe bushings, I found the bolt attaching the lower wishbone to the rear trailing arm can not be easily removed. I recall during a past alignment the technicians (loose term here) had difficulty with a bolt in the rear and I am wondering if this was it. The bolt appears stuck in the ball joint. I am using terms from the parts list at http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BG93 <http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BG93&mospid=47488&btnr=33_100 4&hg=33&fg=30> &mospid=47488&btnr=33_1004&hg=33&fg=30 The bolt will be spin freely and the nut is off. Should I anticipate replacing the ball joint and cut the bolt out? Thoughts appreciated! And yes, they have changed twice. I have yet to install the flange-less part, but eventually will I guess. I've had two people show up with the non-flange types at RTAB sessions and I have turned them away not knowing about the suppression. Pelican parts has this image in their on-line parts catalog. http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/images/Connect-Thumbnails/3332222815 3-M69.jpg Flanged Bushing BMW part number 33 32 2 228 153. My old CD ETK parts list system lists this p/n for the 99M3. The on-line parts list realoem.com lists 33 32 6 770 817, this may be a new number but I don't trust it. Turner lists the *153 number as well http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=33322228153 Their per pair cost seems good and shipping to 98133 is $6.74 Here is good funny thread also http://www.bmwpugetsound.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=24075 KLB -------------------- 7 -------------------- Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2007 06:28:41 -0700 (PDT) From: david kroth <david_kroth@yahoo.com> Subject: E36 M3 RTAB Part Number Realoem shows 33326770817 for my 98 sedan. Dealer orders 33326770817; that's what the receipt says - that's what the parts bag says. The actual part is labeled 33326757885. The design is slightly different than what I'm familiar with. Realoem takes this back to the Z4. Dealer says 885 has superseded 817. Anyone have any recent experience with E36 RTABS? Has there indeed been a change? I don't want to pull the car apart only to find there is a problem. David Kroth david_kroth@yahoo.com

This happened to my car and there was no way of easily removing it and the balljoint eventually got ruined so I had to replace it. Of course, then you start looking at the other ball joints and notice that they have some slop in them... =/ Good luck, Chester > The bolt will be spin freely and the nut is off. Are you renting the tool to remove them? And can it be done with the parts on the car? Yep, I went through this this spring with the new to me M3 sedan. I found a set of flanged ones to install on my M3, but I have a set of the flangless ones sitting on my workbench which I am likely to install next year to test them out. I always use the Ground Control spacers too. Rex

I thought you were against that! ;) If I had those tools, I'd give em to ya, but the reason why I discovered those bolts were seized was when we dropped the rear subframe so everything came out of the car. So we were able to use a more brute-force method ;) Chester --- Stan Shaw <Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net> wrote: > Thanks Chester, that was my thinking, perhaps with 165k miles and a track > future, I should replace all the ball joints... > > Are you renting the tool to remove them? #7. Valve Service Interval - from Lawrence Barbieri

Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2007 13:11:51 -0400 From: "Lawrence Barbieri" <larry@logicalconclusions.com> Subject: Valve Service Interval Hello everyone, I'm in the process of doing a head gasket on my '95 with 130K miles on it. I'm just polling the group here to see: a) what experiences people have had with sending their head out to a machine shop, i.e. what parts did they replace, what was the cost, etc. b) is there a service interval for the valves? The guy at the machine shop seemed to think with that mileage there would be some valve guides that need to be replaced Just so you know, I have a pre 10/95 build date (2/95) so I want to have the valve retainers replaced at a minimum. What about lifters, springs, etc.? Anything I should be aware of there? Thanks, - Larry

And, I've had no problems using them in the M3, throughout it's track life as well as daily-driver retirement :-) But then, I rarely left them in for more than 40,000 miles, so YMMV. (Some have found that the comparable NGK plugs work better than the Bosch, in terms of idle smoothness, etc. I've read that on-line as well as feedback from one of my local mechanics. Seems to be no rhyme or reason as to which cars work well with which plugs. Additionally, I've been advised to switch to appropriate the NGK plugs in the race car - <shrug>.) At least until they change it again. I guess it's good that they are sill feeding developments into the E36 parts bin. I just hope they are for the right reasons.
