#1. Questions on rear ball joints, diff. maint. & trans. maint - from Stan Shaw

Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2007 21:16:05 -0400 From: "Stan Shaw" <Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net> Subject: Questions on rear ball joints, diff. maint. & trans. maint Being a die hard addict of the "while I am in there" task, the following questions arise: 1. I intend to change the four rear ball joints. I have at least one bolt that is resistant to removal. I am wondering if I cut the bolt off on both sides if necessary, while the ball joint removal tool work to remove the ball joint with sheared bolt? If anyone has experience removing the rear ball joints while the rear carrier is still on the car, I would appreciate any input. 2. I have the rear differential out (due to subframe bushel replacement). Since the car has 165k on it, should I have it professional reviewed? If so, what are the likely problems. None known prior to removal. 3. Should I be considering any maintenance to the transmission (5 speed manual)? No known issues, but 165k miles on it. I will be replacing the clutch with a stock unit. Any upgrades would need to be in line with BMW CCA club racing stock class rules, so in general I don't anticipate any for the above 3 items. Thanks!!! I doubt the tool will work with the sheared bolt in place as it probably uses a rod through ball joint to pull the ball joint out. It's just three more bolts and the e-brake cable, no? ;) > 2. As for your sheetmetal, check for cracks where the subframe supports mount. > 3. Should I be considering any maintenance to the > transmission (5 speed manual)? No known issues, but 165k miles on it. But you could just hammer the whole thing out. Bimmerworld sells piece to do that. I had more luck with the threaded rod tool, but maybe a good shot of penatrating oil and more pounding with the sledge would have done the trick. Chris ----- Original Message ----- > 1. You also may want to try Evosport in Huntington Beach. A friend has recently started using his new Canon Digital Elph still camera for in-car video. It can record just over 30 minutes of full motion 640x480 pixel video on the optional 4GB memory card, and quality is terrific. The camera weighs only about 5 oz, so safe mounting is simplified. I realize that this may well not be the answer for you, but for people wanting to record casual in-car video, a digital still camera that also has video capability is very attractive. This particular Canon costs only about $220, a fraction of what a digital camcorder runs. Me, I leave any track driving errors undocumented! Last year at Watkins Glen I started using my Panasonic still camera with movie capability as well. It, like Neil's, records in 640x480 and I can get 1 half hour session on a 1 GB card. This year my son brought his camcorder and while the pictures are much better, for my needs the Panasonic is fine, just not as large as I would like. I use one of these: <http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_reviews/c6.html> Be careful, not all Xacti models have a tripod mount on the bottom. It works GREAT. Works great. 1.5 hours of highest quality 640x480 video on a 2GB SD card. Battery life isn't anything to write home about, but that's my only complaint.
