Thanks again, all, for the input. I really appreciate these lists as I am still new to the BMW world. I finally joined the local chapter of BMWCCA. There's a DE event coming up at Pocono in October, but not sure I can be ready for that, so I have my eyes set on Summit Point for April. My work would definitely not permit me to get into the autox right now, as I often work some week-end hours, but the DE sounds like it would be good place to start in any case. I will still be monitoring this a bit more closely, but feel a bit relieved. I think the manual states a pretty wide variance for oil consumption. As just another data point, I have 51K miles, and have no noticeable oil consumption between 2,500 mile oil changes using Mobil 1 15w50. For a short time I ran Mobil 1 0w40 and did see some change on the dip stick. Once I switched back to MOBIL 1, I didn't see any oil consumption again. I do take the car out for a spin sometimes but don't drive at high RPM often. Switch the oil and you might see a different rate of oil consumption. My car has always consumed a little bit of oil since new, probably on the order of 1 quart per 2500 miles or so, right along manual specs. This is with Mobil 1 15W50. Needed oil more frequently with 10W30. Andrej '97 M3 ~158K Matt Bader wrote: > It is interesting that perhaps oil viscosity may make a difference. > >

Switching to Amsoil 5w40 "European Car Formula" has resulted in a massive decrease in consumption. In fact, on our recent Seatte -> ThunderHill -> Seattle trip the car might have used half a quart. I never had to top up. On the other hand, in the heat at ThunderHill and with two drivers I did have some valve train chatter. Not sure what to do there. #5. BBS black diamond paint code request - from Goss, Patrick - PA
Top
Date: Thu, 6 Sep 2007 14:23:13 -0500 From: "Goss, Patrick - PA" <Patrick.Goss@GMACM.COM> Subject: BBS black diamond paint code request I have a set of the double spoke 8.5 wheels which I want to get refinished. I really like the black diamond color of the BBS RGR forged wheels. If you are not familiar with this color it's certainly not black at all, not gunmetal with metallic flakes, but deceptively gunmetal in base color, however reflective but nothing close to chrome reflective. (Having seen it in person I really liked it; thanks to Dave Flogaus). Some may describe the color as a dirty, dull chrome, but oddly clean. Could anyone offer advice on how to get the paint code that BBS uses? I realize it may be proprietary and thus very much protected, but also realize there may be similarities with other products available. The wheel shop I used last had a reflective silver powdercoat, mimicking the silver chrome you see on the e46 M3 double spoke wheels. I'd go for that, but would rather the darker black diamond as I'm most likely going to have the rim edge machined to the raw casting/polished/clearcoted, and the contrast would IMO look much better, as well as darker wheels on a hellrot body color. If you have any information or advice, I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks, Patrick 97M3/4 wheely hurting

Sure, anyone in the area who wants to borrow the RTAB puller is welcome. Over the winter I'm thinking of replacing the subframe bushings with the same tool, since I still get rubbing with the autox tires on the inside of the fender well. There's plenty of clearance at rest. Bob, If you want to do it at my house, or Mark's, let me know and I'll help. Btw, If any of you guys want to come over to my place in Lansdale to work, let me know. The garage will be free after the weekend and I'd love to play with someone else's car for a change. I just got an air compressor and impact wrench (but no metric impact set yet) and I'm eager to meet the rest of you philly area guys. Paul might be up for loaning out the magic tool for a day but I'm not sure ;) I know I told Pat and Paul I'd try an SCCA race but haven't yet :-P Thanks, Mark

I would give Daryl Robbins a call at Wheel Collision Center (800-292-7467), they can do amazing things to a wheel and you're close being in the Philly area.? I can even take one of my wheels up there and get his first hand opinion on matching the color, if he doesn't already have a diamond finished wheel on site.? I copied Daryl on this email, he might be able to help you right away.
