I'm not sure if Jeff has a S50 or not. But every S50 car that I've seen that shows the behavior Jeff talks about was traced to a blown head gasket. Cars would be fine on the street and then at the track. BTW - I know people just love M&M but I know a guy in San Jose that can do it. He even has the torque plate and everything - bought it when he made my frankenmotor. He is a god at porting too ;-) Marco -----Original Message----- From: Dave DeBuhr [mailto:debuhr@comcast.net] Sent: Wednesday, September 12, 2007 2:19 PM To: E36M3 Subject: [e36m3] RE: [E36M3] Anyone with an extra head? A blown HG is like being pregnant, Either it is or it isn't. How could it possibly be that unless you see coolant in the oil, are losing coolant, etc etc... I'm open to anything, but that just doesn't sound right to me... -----Original Message----- From: Jeff Conner [mailto:jeff.conner@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, September 12, 2007 2:09 PM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] Anyone with an extra head? At my last track day, it was running hot under the stress of going hard, then falling back into normal operating temp when driven at a reasonable (sub 4k rpm) pace. My mechanic - some of the list members know Ramon - tells me this is a sign of impending headgasket failure. Does anyone have a spare head sitting around to sell? My plan is to send it off to Memphis Motorwerks to have them work their magic on it, then have it put back in the car. Another possibility might be the Nokian NRW for something that's actually winter rated, yet driveable in the summer. As others have mentioned, you really have to decide if you're going to run the car in snow. That changes the decision drastically. If you will drive in snow on any appreciable terrain (i.e. hills or sharp corners...maybe both) I'd definitely opt for the security of dedicated winter tires. PIA to store, but worth every penny the first time you find yourself stuck on a minor upgrade in traffic unable to climb it, or, worse yet, in a ditch somewhere. I learned my lesson the easy way by struggling with the former once. These days, I slap on my winter rubber at the first forecast of snow and leave the @#% things on til April fools day. YMMV, of course. Marc Plante E36 M3/4, 80k Vienna, VA

Anywhere else it wouldn't matter, but it sits there right in front of my face, mocking me! This is the 3-spoke wheel on a 98 M3. Does anyone happen to know if that roundel can be replaced? Is it just glued on, so I could peel it off and get another one somewhere? Reed/Seattle

They had several smaller ones for motorcycles. It fits perfectly and I used (GM) black weather strip adhesive to stick it on. The great thing is if you want to remove it you can and it cleans off the steering wheel very easily. :) -------------- Original message -------------- From: Doug Wirth <doug_wirth@yahoo.com> > Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2007 05:47:27 -0700 (PDT) > From: Doug Wirth > Subject: Re: [E36M3] Roundel on steering wheel > > Not sure if I would want a 500mph roundel flying at me when the airbag goes off. > I would expect the OE one to use something more than two sided tape to hold it > on. > > Doug > > > > ----- Original Message ---- > From: "mdriver13@aol.com" > To: E36M3 > Sent: Thursday, September 13, 2007 7:38:39 AM > Subject: Re: [E36M3] Roundel on steering wheel > > > Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2007 08:37:56 -0400 > From: mdriver13@aol.com > Subject: Re: [E36M3] Roundel on steering wheel > > > > > but it sits there right in front of > my face, mocking me! I shut her down & waited 'til it cooled down a bit, restarted & it ran fine after that. Today, in stop & go traffic started to overheat again. Belts need to be replaced but are still there & I replaced the water pump (w/metal impeller) & thermostat a coupe of yrs. ago (car has 110K miles now). Does this point to the clutch fan? I was planning to do the belts & replace coolant soon. What's the replacement interval for the belt pullies? TIA, Luis --------------------------------- Moody friends. Drama queens. Your life? #9. dried brake fluid - from Brian Ruiz

Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2007 16:34:58 -0700 From: "Brian Ruiz" <eurowerke@gmail.com> Subject: dried brake fluid Hey gang, When brake fluid sits out in air, as it dries out does it become somewhat sticky? I have a fluid leak somewhere and I'm fearing it is coming from the slave cylinder on the tranny and getting on my clutch disk, as the clutch is only 2 years old and it has been getting chattery for a while now, especially after sitting overnight. I just filled up my reservoir 2 days ago (not completely to full mark but enough to keep the brake fluid light from coming on), and the light started to flicker again today on the way in to work. I have noticed a dark sticky fluid on the bottom of my transmission on the machined spot with the two threaded screw holes (should something be screwed in there?). The fluid seemed to just weep from the casting, no drip marks that I could find. Could fluid sprayed onto the inside of the bellhousing just weep out like this? Brian build 8/95
