Would prefer a new one (of course) but used is perfectly acceptable. If used, must have even wear and have as much tread and as few heat cycles as possible. TIA!

Date: Sun, 16 Sep 2007 14:58:33 EDT From: Shelhart2@aol.com Subject: OT: Boxster S sale for 2000 / 1 M5 I've got a 2002 Box S with 54k miles in excellent condition and need something bigger for work and the kids. I've been driving my 95 M3 3x a week and the Boxster a couple days a week and it's not practical with 3 kids under 10 and a job that requires a lot of client interaction. I should be able to get $26k for the Boxster as it has a new Borla exhaust and varous factory upgrades. I haven't researched the M5 and would love any feedback on the 2000 / 01. It would be ideal to pick up a 2000 with 75k ish that was well maintained. Any known issues to watch for other than the standard fare? Shel, Check out www.m5board.com, there is a lot of information there about these cars. I had a 2000 for 19 months and think I must have had a "bad one". I bought it at 52K from a guy in Long Island NY, it was pristine with all the maintenance records from BMW. During the time it was under warranty, the dealer replaced $12K worth of stuff from Rear Main Seal to both catalytic converters, one Vanos unit and numerous sensors. It drank oil at an average (over most of the 19 months) of 950mL/1000 miles and that is using the Castrol TWS 10W60 at $8/L. I also found the clutch pedal to be a tad heavy for stop-and-go traffic. The final straw for me was the driveshaft went out at 92K miles, I had just had enough and sold it for $20K which was more than the local dealer would give me in trade (I was ofered $18K). All that being said it is an awesome car. It's the kind of car that you just can't use 100% of without getting into legal difficulties quickly; they are just so fast and are very comfortable at the same time. I might someday buy one again, but not a 2000. I would look for the latest, lowest mile 03 out there. Regards Jamie

My 00 M5 had $25K+ worth of repairs under warranty all before 40K miles. Clutches are weak spots on M5's. The electronics, instrument cluster and sat nav are all issues too.... Learn to the clean the MAF's yourself to help with the CEL's. These m5's are very sensitive to dirty MAF's and will throw codes like crazy when they get dirty and you loose a lot of power even before that happens.... Just because I am 'asking' $26K doesn't mean I can get $26K. Looking at the Black book for Florida, $26K is what you can expect to pay to a dealer for an 'X-Clean' Boxster S with 50K-60K miles on it. An average is $20K-$24K, once again from a dealer. Private party is usually less. Black book bases their prices from actual sales, not asking prices. A resource to ask about E39 M5's would be the Yahoo Group bmwe39. http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/bmwe39/ a good group of people.
