Is the car paid for? If it is any money you spend on it is money you would have spent on a new car in payments. A paid for car, to me, even if you spend money on it, is not a money pit. I typically keep cars until the wheels fall off or they have to be crushed... #6. Headgasket, my turn now... - from Jeff Conner

Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2007 21:57:55 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Conner <jeff.conner@yahoo.com> Subject: Headgasket, my turn now... Hey All, You may recall my recent search for a spare head to send off to get machined, as well as my overheating-on-track woes. Well, I found the head, sent some money to fellow list member and championer of DIYs, Mark Duckworth, and his kit of tools arrived today. The progress has been profound and confidence building. Starting last Friday, armed with my Bentley manual and the pelican parts DIY, I've taken my engine bay apart to the tune of getting the head off the car and camshafts safely removed from said head this evening. Like many have said, it's an enormous amount of little jobs that adds up to a great deal of tedium. The adventure of cam removal has reminded me of the lesson I'd hoped to take with me going into the job -- be CAUTIOUS! To all who responded to me in my quest for stuff and to Mark in his effort to do his head gasket: Thank you. This list rocks. I'll keep you appraised of my progress from time to time, and hope to have the car out on the track again by the 19h. -jeff 98 sedan 95 trackdog (on jackstands...) ____________________________________________________________________________________ Moody friends. Can't really hear it from inside the car, but once I pull into the garage with the window down you can definitely hear it.? Been happening maybe every other time I?use the car.? For example, half-hour weekend?drive, pull into a gas station and hear the chirp.? Shut her down, pump some gas, start her up and no chirp -- engine sounds lean and mean.? Next morning - chirping again.? The car has only 51K miles on her.? New belts less than 5K miles ago including Rogue underdrive pulley kit with belt.? What is this -- the belt tensioners, water pump, ghosts in the machine, etc.? I'm thinking tensioners, but what do I know ;-)) As usual, TIA, Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA 2005/2006 Philly Region BSP Champion Sponsored by WCC & Rogue Engineering ________________________________________________________________________ Email and AIM finally together. Bob, Based on your description this could definitely be the belt tensioners. Mine were chirping for a while before I replaced them during the UD pulley install. Nice and quiet now. Throw in some clanking/squealing race pads, creaking poly bushings, squeaky exhaust mounts, and a little flywheel rattle and you've got a real crowd pleaser at the gas station. #10. Eurosport m50 manifold installation - from Matt Bader
Top
Date: Thu, 4 Oct 2007 12:04:11 -0400 From: "Matt Bader" <mbader@exammaster.com> Subject: Eurosport m50 manifold installation Hi, just got my car back yesterday after having an m50 manifold installed on my 98 M3 using the Eurosport kit. Given my experience and skill level I decided to have the performance shop do the installation. Glad I did as it was not the easiest of installations. Also, because I am using forced induction, a couple of things about my intake set-up are different than stock. All in all, John from European Performance (16+ years experience) said the kit worked well. There were two issues: the bracket holding the fuel rail (and keeping the injectors) in place was not designed correctly, and so he had to make a modification. There were also a couple of places where supplied fasteners were too short. I also had the idle control valve replaced while he was in there (car has 95k miles). The fuel rail cover supplied with the kit looks nice, and it has a stock look overall. Driving impressions is that the car is actually smoother, and possibly even a little quieter under the hood under normal driving conditions. It does feel stronger, although not overwhelmingly so, which would not be expected anyway. Pulls better to red line, but I have hadn't a chance yet to really test that out too much. One puzzling thing is a new sound that is very noticeable after lifting off of a heavy throttle. It sounds like air coming out from the engine bay. My son, who was riding with me when I picked up the car, thinks its normal blow-off from the forced induction. My previous turbo car did not make that sound, nor did my car before the manifold swap. Is this normal because the car is getting more air? Any ideas or experience with this. Matt Bader 98 M3/4 Delaware
