#4. '98 M3 vs '99 360 - from Stefano G

Date: Mon, 8 Oct 2007 09:38:19 -0400 (EDT) From: "Stefano G" <stefanoale@excite.com> Subject: '98 M3 vs '99 360 I drove a Ferrari 360 Modena a couple of years ago for a good 20mins unsupervised on the road and the M3 felt pretty good driving back. The 360 certainly had the looks and driving it on the street I had no idea of its limits but overall: - it felt a lot more comfortable over bump than I expected - power was nice but not crazy - brakes were very very nice and the car barely pitched fwd during a few hard stops (this was the best part of the car) - handling was again nice but not crazy (need the track for this) - engine noise was nice too I thought that the M3 would feel like crap afterwards but all in all it didn't feel so far from it and I had seating for 5 and a useable trunk not to mention $150K more in my pocket. I'm sure driving the 360 on track would have been different but for that $$$ I'd rather have the M3 (and maybe a p-car yes I said it!) and a serious track monster like a radical. My wife has been interested in getting a 993 tiptronic for awhile; not a bad mid-life crisis as far as I'm concerned. We drove from Austin to Houston to look at a couple of p-cars in our 95 M3. After the test drives, I was *very* happy to get back into the M. I've never driven an E46 M3, but I can imagine it might be similar to the 993 - more GT car feel. BTW: The p-car will be hers; they'll have to pry the M3 from my cold, dead hands. One way to tell this is that once the x-brace is on, if you jack up the rear of the car, the entire side comes up.. Hence, the frame is stiffer. Best, CHEAPEST upgrade for a e36! Lately it just appears to be less powerful, although is showing no check engine lights or obvious misfires or anything. I used to be able to out-pull most stock M3's on the straightaway's but a couple weeks ago I really struggled against stock M3's and was really out-pulled by a friend's car that I know we used to be pretty even on flat out acceleration runs. It's been a couple years since I've changed plugs, and have never changed O2 sensors, although I don't know if those two could conspire to produce less power without some more obvious symptom? Motor has 117k miles and other than a Dinan chip is stock, burns no oil etc. I have NOT done the valve retainer upgrade for early production '95's yet (I know, I know it's on my list...) but I haven't heard of power loss attributed to that. Just catastrophic failure! Any suggestions on where to look to regain my lost power appreciated! Last track event of my year at Mid Ohio in two and a half weeks... Kurt J.
