#1. Transmission fluid capacity? - from Peter Fry
Top
Date: Sat, 13 Oct 2007 14:19:05 -0400 From: Peter Fry <PeterFry@aol.com> Subject: Transmission fluid capacity? Fellow M3 pilots- I'm getting ready to buy some Royal Purple Synchromax to replace the trans fluid in my 99 M3. This'll be the car's 3rd change, but the first time with me buying the fluid to bring to the shop. What's the capacity? And how much gear oil will I need for the differential? Also - thanks to all who had ideas on my "shifting into 1st" problem. I'm going to start with the fluid change and a clutch bleed and go from there. Mike Miller's (BMW CCA Tech Talk) email diagnosis is a "normally" worn 1st synchro ring. Just the kind of wear I was trying to avoid with the every-36k trans fluid changes over the life of the car. All you other guys with 100k-mile-plus cars: are you seeing indications of synchro wear? For those who didn't remember- I'm having a lot of resistance going into 1st gear with the car at a standstill and the clutch in. Thanks, ___ Peter Fry

Very seldom do I have trouble with the first gear thing. I've got Mobil 1 in the gearbox now. I've had Red Line and Royal Purple in the past. I can't say that I've noticed any significant difference between them all. Still shifts like new. I don't know if it's the best route but I went through a grommet located roughly behind the glovebox. Regards Jamie

There are two grommets, one on each side of the car, which are a great way to run wires through the firewall. The passenger side one is easier to get to - it's pretty much right behind the glovebox IIRC. I basically had to add a hole in my '98 since I had to feed two big connectors through which wouldn't have fit through an existing grommet. So I'd say if you see the grommet behind the glovebox and you're just feeding wires then use that. On my car I didn't see any other good way to feed connectors through. BTW I dig having those damn gauges. :-) Carlos 98 M3
