I briefly drove one of the two 335d's that were prepped for the 25 Hours of Thunderhill last year. Trust me when I say: we WANT these to come over here. As for the "electronic limited slip" doesn't the 96+ E36M3 demonstrate some degree of ELS? My question: What the heck are "double-helical ball bearings". -------------------- 4 -------------------- Date: Thu, 18 Oct 2007 15:56:33 -0400 From: "Ahmad Lutfeali" <m3_racer99@hotmail.com> Subject: OT: 1 Series Diff Can someone shine some light on this diff type? What exactly is an electronic limited slip and how does it work? Bean counter wants to know. Ahmad The rear differential on the 1 Series comes from a new generation of final drives optimized for running smoothness. Featuring double-helical ball bearings for the first time, the differential runs at an even lower operating temperature reached more quickly than before thanks to the reduction of fluid required in the differential. Like the 1 Series Coupe, the Convertible features an electronic limited slip function built into the vehicle's Dynamic Stability Control system.

W/(a), you have a much better chance of being able to use all of your power for "thrust" -- (b) is "subtractive", and frustratingly so. My old 996 had a setup like this and it was maddening in the rain, especially corning at relatively low speeds. Turn & merge, inside wheel slips, power cuts, traction regained, rinse & repeat. Really frustrating. #9. summer tires - from Russ Doucet

Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2007 20:31:07 -0400 From: "Russ Doucet" <russ@russdoucet.com> Subject: summer tires I've got 225/60/16 Michelin Pilot MXV4s (if memory serves) on right now. Pretty happy all around with them, but similar replacements are pricey. They're getting a bit thin though, and one has a significant leak. I have snows for winter. Thinking about replacing them. Priorities, in order: High: Price Dry performance Wet performance Medium: Smooth / no vibrations Treadlife Low / don't care Noise Tramlining Looks Brand Suggestions? Does anybody know, when comparing dry/wet performance of Tirerack's "Ultra high performance all season" and "High performance all season" where does that fall in their spectrum of summer performance tire ratings? These pilots were absolutely suicidal in a light dusting of snow just below freezing; I do have snows so I don't care that much but it would be nice not to be trapped by a light snow that comes unseasonably early. I'm not willing to give up much in summer for it though. How are the cheap brands like Sumitomo and Khumo holding up? I had a set of Khumo Estca 711's on my E30 that I liked very well from a performance point of view, but they got lumpy as they wore and eventually vibrated so much I couldn't stand it, even though they had lots of tread left. -Russ.
