Date: Sat, 27 Oct 2007 12:02:27 -0400 From: "M540" <m540@bellsouth.net> Subject: Window jammed All: The passenger window on my 1995 M3 Coupe seems to have jammed. Thankfully it is up, but when I open the door it no longer retracts slightly and when I try to power down the window I just get the slightest twitch and a click. Prior to this it was making some unhealthy crunchy sounds occasionally. I do not think it is a dead motor as the motor has not shown weakness. Has anyone had this happen before? Any suggestions as to likely modes of failure and/or complexity of repair? Thank you, Kevin

I've been running M1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 in my non-BMW for the last several oil changes. After I changed it, I noticed my average mileage went up almost 2 mpg an my motor is down on oomph, by my seat of the pants. I went on the http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ site and some of the people there think that the truck grade M1 detergents are so strong that they actually clean up the cylinder walls and reduce your compression. It may be urban legend, but it squares with my experience. Jon

#6. Sunroof Removal - from Matt Bader
Top
Date: Sun, 28 Oct 2007 11:21:04 -0400 From: "Matt Bader" <mbader@exammaster.com> Subject: Sunroof Removal I was able to successfully remove the sunroof cassette today. Thanks to everyone who helped with advise. There is an excellent DIY post on Bimmerforums for anyone interested in doing this. It appears to based on either a Coupe or other E36 variant as there were a couple of minor differences in the details. The most tedious part is removing the headliner: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=348275 I was able to do it without removing the B pillar panel but doubt I'll get the headliner back in without having to move it out of the way. All went well accept that the beast is very heavy, and when I released one of the clip fasteners in the back, the whole thing dropped down rather abruptly. I had to wrestle with it for a minute to avoid forever being trapped in the back of the car. The one downside was that I scraped my armrest slightly. I quickly removed the spring clip inserts on the ends of the cassette to prevent further carnage. I weighed everything afterwards, including the motor, and it looks like about 36-37 lbs of top end weight that I am thankfully getting rid of. This week I will insert the carbon fiber panel. Many thanks to Bill Townsend for his suggestions on how to make a clean and trouble-free fit with the panel insert. Matt Bader 98 M3/4 Delaware

Date: Sun, 28 Oct 2007 14:51:33 -0400 From: "M540" <m540@bellsouth.net> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Window jammed Thank you to everyone who replied with suggestions. I pulled the door panel and vapor barrier off this afternoon and looked over things thoroughly. A few of the plastic clips are showing age, but I don't think they or any of the other mechanical bits are causing my troubles. When I activate the window switch there is a very distinctive "click" from the regulator/motor assembly but nothing else. I assume this is a definitive diagnosis for a bad regulator/motor? Per the Bentley that entire chunk has to be replaced as a unit and the window glass must come out to replace it. Is there any workaround for that? It looks like it should be easier. Thank you again, Kevin

Date: Sun, 28 Oct 2007 19:03:42 -0700 From: "Stiles" <stiles_s@hotmail.com> Subject: sunroof preventative maintenance? After browsing the diys for sunroof cassette removal, my takeaway was that I'd rather not ever need to do that job :) Any tips re: preventative maintenance on the sunroof? I keep the tracks lubed w/lithium. Anything else? Pull the fuse & never use it? Thanks, Scott.

Nah...use it and don't worry about it. Keep the tracks clean and use appropriate lube when needed, but otherwise don't sweat it. I have done a lot of maintenance on non-BMW sunroofs and for the most part BMW sunroofs are awesome. Even if they need repair they are fairly easy to remove and parts are available to fix them. I'll do a R&R on a E36 sunroof 10 times before I would do another one on a Land Rover.....and those often have two... Dave
