Pulled off the access cover and rapped on the motor a couple times with a big screwdriver handle and it's worked ever since. The Germans are into that tough love stuff. Umm, no. Re-read above, note "seat of pants." I don't have compression tools at home. But I know what speed I once could attain at the crest of the hill leading to my house. I'm down almost 5 miles an hour. There are not a lot of faults that reduce engine output yet increase fuel mileage with no noticeable engine operating changes. This fuel mileage is the highest I've ever sustained on this car in over 180,000 miles of driving. I puzzle over it every time I fill up. It's freaky. > I think your 2mpg increase > is bit ambitious, unless you were running a 60 weight previously. Got the tank-by-tank fill records and rolling ten tank averages to show you, if you wish, on a long highway commute and gasoline brands that haven't changed in 3 years. I generally ran Quaker State 10w-30 semi synth and changed every 3-5k, because I'm cheap. With gas prices going up and with me having less time to change oil, I decided to switch to something that could extend my change intervals and improve my mileage. Thus the M1 truck oil since it had a good viscosity spread and was cheap, relatively speaking. > Keep in > mind that oils designed for diesels typically do have more additives, but > the difference isn't that significant. Losing power and better economy don't go hand in hand unless the car is asking for less fuel... if it was loss of compression you would try to use more fuel to maintain the same performance. #5. M3 spoiler bulbs - from Ed MacVaugh

Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2007 20:00:13 -0400 From: Ed MacVaugh <macvaugh@comcast.net> Subject: M3 spoiler bulbs I issued a concise record of what I believed was the factory rear spoiler situation a week or so ago. I am now in need of suggestions regarding bulbs for those center mounted lights. The official BMW answer is that the light bar is not repairable by replacing the bulbs, just replace the whole bar at a list price of $70. Anyone have a more cost efficient answer? TIA, Ed

I've got 85K on the car and just put about 11K on it with full syn oil. Previously I'd been using Castrol GTX 20-50. Because I lost about 2 qts, and topped off to get back to the right level, I went back to the organic stuff and did a DE this past weekend. What should I be doing to check this out? Return to full syn? Check the valve guides? Is the head a weak spot? Check the rings? Is the block a weak spot? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Bill e36 M3 2/99 build
