As someone else said, the color of the smoke and what you were doing when it smoked matters. A puff of black smoke on a hard pull is fairly normal as the engine gets older and mine does it semi-routinely. Just carbon buildup. The carbon buildup could be the result of leaky (but not excessively) rings (as in my case) or worn valve guides or more simply just normal buildup over time... which honestly can happen to some extent even when you drive the car hard. If you get some blue smoke right on startup, that's indicative of worn valve guides or blown head gasket. If you get blue smoke all the time or a good amount after sitting at a stoplight and taking off slowly, you've got an unfortunate problem with a severe leak, worn valve guides or bad rings. If you get white sweet smelling steam out the tail pipe after the car has warmed up (and other cars on the road are not steaming, i.e. it's 100 degrees outside), just shut the car off, it's done, new head gasket. And finally if you get purple smoke tell your car to stop smoking weed! I can't remember the dimensions of that bolt. If it's not recessed, you could simply dremel, or air wizard a slot across the face and then use a flat blade screwdriver to lever it loose. By 'lever' I mean don't use the screwdriver in the traditional manner, come in from side of the bolt the same way you would with a box end wrench. I wouldn't re-use the bolt either, get a new one before even attempting to hack up the old one. #10. RE: [E36M3] Carbon Fiber Hood - from Matt Bader
Top
Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2007 11:30:38 -0400 From: "Matt Bader" <mbader@exammaster.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Carbon Fiber Hood I just did a carbon insert for the sunroof. And that project went reasonably well. It was roughly 4 lbs in exchange for 36 lbs up top, so I was happy with that. Quality of the piece I used was good, but not perfect. I believe that sunroof delete is a reasonably safe weight reduction, but I know what you mean about the balance issue. You also have to consider safety, and structural issues such as body flex, etc. Right now, with removing a lot of materials from the trunk area, and with forced induction up front, I have undoubtedly tipped the weight balance somewhat toward the front. This is offset partially by the lightweight flywheel I am using. So, I try to keep that in mind when exploring other weight saving options. I have considered sourcing CF for the hood, and leaving the trunk alone to try to keep the 50/50 balance as much as possible. Using lightweight seats is probably a wash as far as front/rear weight distribution from what I can tell. In general, I think weight savings is a good thing, and will also help in braking performance. I met a guy at a car event who had a Charger SRT-8 with the 425 hp hemi engine. The thing had massive brakes, but no wonder, the car weighed 4100 lbs! There have been CF parts for the hood, rear deck, and door skins. I'm also interested for my M Roadster (2000). I recall something like 8-10 pounds per equivalent 1 HP gain. Loosing 100 pounds will assist in performance and things like tire and suspension wear. It will also change the balance of the car which could be a problem. Please let me (and the list) know how your adventure turns out.
