I live in the Poconos in northeastern PA. I have a winter vehicle now so it shouldn't see too much more winter duty going forward. Even so, you can imagine what the factory pistons look like after nearly 200k miles. I would take pictures, but they're over at my buddy's house right now. Given your past experiences and the effort involved in cleaning up old pistons, would you say that the stainless pistons would be money well spent for a street vehicle? I'm curious if you'd make the same choice in my position. I haven't popped the pistons yet, and they may be serviceable again with some work. But for $140, is it worth the hassle knowing that they'll just continue to crust up? The VHT caliper paint isn't anything like the fancy epoxy paint, and I'm not expecting miracles. I am sticking with black for the brackets and cast aluminum silver for the calipers. If there's some deterioration in the paint after a couple years, that's fine by me. VHT recommends that the paint be cured at 250F for one hour, so I was going to run the kerosene space heater and hang each item over it with a coat hanger for an hour. Time will tell how it will hold up. - Chris

But for $140, is it worth the > hassle knowing that they'll just continue to crust up? I've rebuilt a bunch of calipers in excess of 50+ and I have yet to replace the pistons. I did opt for remanufactured ones for my E30 as it was a no brainer decision, my old ones as cores + $40 = no brainer to me. Heck the rebuild kits themselves are getting up there in price and we're talking about two rubber pieces. Some guy had a seized caliper at a track event I was at once and with a 1000 grit piece of sand paper and a rebuid kit someone had I was able to fix it for him. I'd clean em up, rebuild them/paint them and call it good. If you need to clean the pistons up it won't take much to do it. The reason they corroded in the first place is that the boots on the calipers were more than likely torn and allowed moisture inside the bore. Freon is not the same as 134.? 134a contains hydrogen instead of chlorine and is supposed to curtail the ozone depleting characteristics of freon (R12).? Bush senior legislated that R12 would stop being produced as of 1995 which is why R12, if you can get it is so expensive.? The OEM and aftermarket manufacturers have all spent quite a bit of time developing retrofit kits for the "older" cars.? I'd take it to the garage to have them recover properly.? I can't imagine that either R12 or 134A would be great to handle or would be good for you...? Shel -----Original Message----- From: Kent L. #6. Jack and Stands - from Mark D

Is this simply not possible? I was reading the reviews on some of the craftsman jack and they're terrible. It's just that my pep boys special is starting to drop the car slowly after years of use and one of my pep boys special stands is slightly bent (that's the really scary part) Of course it's quite helpful if it fits under an M3 to the central jack points :) Thanks, Mark

One simple weld of the post that is molded into the oil pan to the top plate of the baffle. A mildly skilled Al welder can do that. The Turner parts would be much more involved. I had a friend taking welding classes take it to school and they did it in minutes. --Bill 96 M3 coupe

#9. where to tires rub first? - from David Thomas

Date: Thu, 1 Nov 2007 15:13:21 -0700 From: David Thomas <dave@sasdatalink.com> Subject: where to tires rub first? My new Direzza's seem to be rubbing something on the passenger side of the car with a bit of suspension compression. I cant see where they would be rubbing and they have not rubbed enough to leave any marks yet. What are the first contact points that tires typically start rubbing? It sure sounds like something rubbing a wheel well liner, but I dont see how that can be the case. I think the noise is coming from the rear, but I am not 100% certain at this point...kinda hard to tell. Oh, this is a '95 coupe with staggered countours with 225/45's up front and 245/40's in the rear. The last tires I ran were also Dunlops in the same sizes, no issues with those. Dave
