Yeah, I had a jack pad once that I almost bought from a friend of mine. The problem with the jackpad, for me, was that it wouldn't fit safely and securely on the jack itself. The jack was a different shape than the jack pad so they didn't mesh well. Additionally, when I used the jack pad to raise the car, I couldn't fit a jackstand under the jack points on the car because the jack was still too close to the car...it interfered with the position of the jackstand. I also never felt very comfortable with the cantilevered nature of the jack pad. It just wasn't confidence-inspiring. In the end, I have come down to using some 2x6's under the front wheels to give clearance there, and just raising the car from the differential carrier in the rear. While it is something of a production to get it all done, it does seem to be a solid and safe way to raise and lower the car. I'd love to have a smaller, lighter jack, though. It'll be a while yet before my Checker's special wears out, though. -- Matthew S Finlay

So I was in the middle of renewing my NY registration and noticed that the rate was almost double that of a same year '98 Nissan Maxima SE 5spd (my other car) I just renewed ($120). Feeling inquisitive I decided to spend 5 mins and figure out why that would be. Vehicle cost should not affect the rate, so as I looked I noticed that the weight on the renewal indicates I love a fat lady, very fat, 3,900lb to be exact. The weight listed for the maxima is pretty accurate at 3014lb. I can guarantee you that the M3 is not a half Elise heavier. I called DMV and got a decent guy who confirmed my assessment but also the weight DMV has for the M3 and said uhm... weird, you should be able to weight the vehicle and send us in the actual and we'll update our records. I'm really doing this cause I'm sick of uncle Sam screwing people just enough that they won't care about squaring things off but even more because I want to defend my love's honor and mine ( She is NOT FAT, chubby maybe but that's ok ) --- as I write this I get bounced around a few times to different DMV folks until... I WIN UNCLE SAM LOSES! 1 - 100! YES! SHE IS SKINNY! Average weight 3175lb confirmed ! Now I get to go to DMV and fill out some forms. Is this victory? Wonder how you managed to get that original weight. I just confirmed, my registered weight (in NYS) for my '99 M3 is 3175 but only 2723 for my '86 325. So, my M3 is definitely a bit of a porker, with an additional 452 lbs. over the 325. It is a '97 740iL. I now see curves and indentations I've never seen before. The fabric matched perfectly. I didn't have them do the sunroof as it was unnecessary. Thanks to everyone for your advice and direction. Bill '99 M3. P. S. The leather arm rest in the M3 had gotten hard and discolored when we bought it about 18 months ago. The same shop will make it "like new" for somewhere between $65 and $95. I'll ask for that as a Christmas present.

#8. Current Drain Update... or not - from Steve Klein
Top
Date: Fri, 2 Nov 2007 16:31:11 -0500 From: Steve Klein <s.klein@steveklein.cc> Subject: Current Drain Update... or not Well, in the face of decreasing temps, I've put the car back together so I can have it towed to a shop on Mon. I disconnected everything I could find, leaving the computer unplugged and with my new, supe-duper true RMS multitester, I get a consistent 2.07A draw on the whole system. Haumph! /* don't remember updating the list on my findings last Sun, but here's a post on BimmerForums with the details: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php? p=11097746#post11097746 and a direct link to the images folder if you can't access the above: http://www.steveiklein.cc/images/M31007/ */ I've no idea what to suspect at this point, but I'm leaving it to a shop with the diagnostic computer to find out what's at fault. I disconnected the alt this morning thinking that perhaps the voltage regulator went to crap in the process, but much to my disappointment, a steady 2.07A. At that point I decided to use the warmer weather to put the intake back on and reassemble the engine compartment. I'm leaving the under dash bolster and cover off to facilitate their access. One question about gas in the oil: With about a cup that ran down into two cylinders and drained past into the sump, I should probably drain and change the oil, shouldn't I? I saw a small wet spot where the lighter gas had seeped past the gaskets on the pan, so some of it found its way out, but I don't know what it would do in there. I haven't cranked it at all since the injectors dumped it in last Fri (so one week). Shame as it was a fresh dose of Mobil 1, too. :( On another note, supposing my computer didn't survive the corrosion, can anyone recommend a good source for a replacement? I've got a Eurosport Conforti chip that I'll pull out and replace with the original if I must. Any advice greatly appreciated. Eeesh. Cheers, Steve

#9. Re: Bad Morning - Battery and Ignition Issues - from Mark D

Date: Sat, 03 Nov 2007 00:23:12 -0400 From: Mark D <mdlkml@atari-source.com> Subject: Re: Bad Morning - Battery and Ignition Issues So I pulled the plugs on my misfiring engine... A little disheartening... Engine has 190,000 mi, Bear in mind this car consumes around 1-1.5 quarts of oil per 1000 miles. These plugs have 9,000 miles on them since my top end rebuild. http://aoi.atari-source.com/~mduckworth/1996_m3_plugs/ The pictures are massive, but all the better for a good web diagnosis right? They're also mostly the same so you can probably just load the first one up if you want to look. Those are in order as you would look at the engine from the right hand side (1 right, 6 left). The computer threw P0302 cylinder #2 misfire... However they all look pretty much the same. In the pics, you may want to take note of the fact that the #2 plug was brushed a bit before I gave up and decided to see what the other plugs looked like. From a look at my spark plug chart this is caused by: 1. Over rich 2. Weak ignition voltage or 3. Extremely low cylinder compression. 3. Sounds bad and maybe not my particular case. All of my cylinders were firing and while compresson is probably low considering the miles, I doubt it's "extremely" low (non-functionally low). I still have a solid 200HP left in this engine for sure, and I still get 22MPG. 2. Original coils with 190,000 miles? Distinct possibility. 1. O2 Sensors with 190,000 miles? Distinct possibility. Failing O2 sensors do cause the car to run rich. If the monitoring sensors are failing at the same rate the primary sensors are, it makes sense it would never manage to throw a code. However a sniff of the exhaust as of recently did not detect rich burning. The first thing I thought when looking at these plugs is of VAC's dire warning that sealing up the top end without doing the bottom end will cause a lot of oil to seep past the rings. Maybe this buildup is burnt up oil... Is there a way to tell, can a sample of it be analyzed for a reasonable cost? It's worth noting that every plug came out with the slightest tug. They were all torqued to spec but they felt REALLY loose in there. #2 which was misfiring was by far the loosest while #5 was the tightest. When you release a fastener you have to "break it loose". #5 is the only one that "broke loose". Any expert (or not so much) opinions would really be appreciated. I would really like to do 4 new O2 sensors, clean the MAF, new ignition coils and plugs and hope for the best rather than do the bottom end this winter. Just bought a house and I don't even have a quote yet for them to do the bottom end rebuild for me. Is there any value to a cold engine compression test? I have a crappy harbor freight gauge.
