Call your local independent BMW shop and ask if they have a recommendation for a decent machine shop or welder guy (or search the yellow pages for 'welding'). It's a simple weld and you only have to look at it before it is installed so it doesn't even have to be pretty... Of course, that would have necessitated me actually getting the old one out of the car first as I need the cams for the new motor. <sigh> Kirk Lachman Sin City Chapter '95 M3 JP (soon, real soon in a geologic time scale)

A Bose companion 3 in the garage comes highly recommended (along with the ticked off townhouse neighbors associated with it) Good luck! Thanks, Mark

Just a note on my VAC baffle, coming from having had a turner kit where the flaps were sticking (using Amsoil 20w50 racing TRO, changing freuqently, still not sure why that was happening). With the turner kit was getting low oil pressure warnings on high G turns (due to those flaps). With the VAC kit, the warning lights are off completely. So, price... is a very complex thing, and a good baffle, is not something to get cheap on. They do cleaning as someone mentioned, it has to be perfect/etc. Anyway, $85/prep/weld is a reasonable price (in my book). -Ben 97 m3 (Prepared / Gutted / caged / you name it)

Well... actually when it comes to welding pretty indicates a lot and in this case an aluminum TIG weld should be pretty especially if it's only one weld that you're relying on. If it isn't pretty it indicates either a cold weld, lack of penetration, or other symptoms of poor fusion. With aluminum you can blow through the material easily as well. I'd say find a good welder than can weld pretty TIG welds. :-) Carlos 98 M3 89 325i

That is a bit steep but probably not absurd. Is anyone else surprised vendors with baffle kits do not offer a pan > exchange program. Some folks daily drive their M3's for example. The oil pan that is returned isn't in very good condition, questionable damage, slow returns, etc. It is probably far more pain that it is worth. It is possible that the jets are misaligned enough that they are not allowing the fluid to flow, try moving them some and try squirting again. They are very sensitive to being aligned properly and if they are turned too far, they can impede flow completely. Regards, Rich

I can't think of any engine builder that hasn't had an engine grenade on them (well ok, mine hasn't. Yet) The thing that matters is how does the builder treats the client subsequently. It's a hard call, especially if the client is an idiot. The customer is not always right. Sometimes the client wants a reliable engine but insists on using old valve springs, or doesn't follow break in procedures, or zings it to 9K. Unless the builder does something really stupid and obvious it can be really hard to trace root cause of an engine failure. I actually feel sorry for some engine builders, some of the stories I've heard..... BTW - The VAC baffle is a direct fit replacement for the stock "baffle". It really doesn't need to be welded, the stock one is held in by two pins and a rivet type thing. Marco Builds his own - therefore can only point a finger at himself. -----Original Message----- From: Rich Dorffer [mailto:E36M3Digest@gmail.com] Sent: Thursday, November 08, 2007 7:05 PM To: E36M3 Subject: [e36m3] RE: [E36M3] RE: VAC baffle weld....
