It appears to be mainly an output device for driver information and systems warnings, but not sure if it is otherwise tied into the DME. Date: Sun, 18 Nov 2007 18:03:48 -0500 From: Jeff Bjerke <jbjerke@charter.net> Subject: Re: [E36M3] OBC Conversion I'm fully convinced I do not need the full 18 button OBC if there's that much involved. I've had it on prior M3's and to be honest, I didn't use those functions much at all. It doesn't appear that there is a repair for mine either. I'll look for a replacement. One question: If I bought an 18 button, can I plug it into my existing harness and just have a few buttons for decoration only? The full 18 button seems to be more common than my current version. Jeff Bjerke 98 M3 Coupe ---- David Michael <adavidmichael@gmail.com> wrote: ============= Jeff. I did this conversion based on thee directions on bimmerforums, pelican parts as well as my own research using a copy of the TIS wiring diagrams (more detailed than Bentley). It can be as easy or difficult as you like, depending on how "OEM" you want the install to be. The "quick and dirty" way splices into the wring harness using the awful 3m-connectors, typically doing so directly behind the IC. The "correct" way is to use the proper color wires to run back to the correct wiring junction. In this case, it's mostly the big wiring block way up high under the dash on the drivers side kick panel (ie-"above" the hood release handle). There are some other wires that need to new pins on the IC connectors, as well as some stuff behind the glovebox. I found all the correct wires at the junction box except one. That one I had to splice into the correct wire down by the steering column. I did the installation without replacing the turnsignal to get the fingertip control, and I did not hook the wire up that goes to the alarm system (behind the glovebox). Everything else works, and it took at least 10 hours, but most of that was thinking and wire harness making. I bought a 10 pack of the correct (small) gauge wire, and marked them with paint pens to make the correct "stripe" color. There are no 3m connectors in the install. The number of wires you need to hook up is not a problem, but doing it nicely is time consuming. Let me know if you have any questions Dave 98 M3/4 On Nov 17, 2007 9:54 AM, Jeff Bjerke <jbjerke@charter.net> wrote: > Date: Sat, 17 Nov 2007 9:45:11 -0500 > From: Jeff Bjerke <jbjerke@charter.net> > Subject: OBC Conversion > > Has anyone tried this: > > E-Bay Item # 150182336498 > > My OBC is the base one and has several pixels missing. The 18 button unit gets it power and ground from the connector that the 11 button unit does not have. You have to remove the wires/pins from the "white" connector and install them in the correct location in the "black" connector (or visa versa). #4. thanks and bon voyage - from Stiles

Date: Sun, 18 Nov 2007 16:55:23 -0800 From: "Stiles" <stiles_s@hotmail.com> Subject: thanks and bon voyage I sold my 1997 M3 a couple days ago to a thrilled young enthusiast. Really happy to see it go to someone who will appreciate the car and take good care of it. He had to sell his project 2002tii in order to make room for it, so he's obviously a BMW fan. I pointed him at the list, so you all will probably hear from him soon. This was my second stint on the list. My first was from ~99-2001 during my first round with e36 M3 ownership. My second started almost exactly 2 years ago when I picked up another one to tinker with. These are really special cars, and this list is a bit part of what makes owning them so much fun. What's next? Not sure. Probably still going to go buy a new boxster s, though the 997s are calling my name loudly as well. Thanks to the list for all the help and camaraderie over the years. Take care, and enjoy the cars, Scott Stiles.

Whatever you do, post paint get some of the clear film applied to the bumper. No matter who does it the paint on the bumper probably won't be as good as the factory and two years down the road you'll be pissed looking at a bumper full of stone chips. I live in the south bay, so nearby is preferable. Never needed any bodywork done since I lived here, so I really have no clue. I need to get a new front bumper cover put on, as the old one is hopelessly chipped and peeled. It'll be on my dime, so of course cost is a factor, but mostly I just want it done right. I figure anywhere I take it will be in the 1000-1500 range anyway. I finally got around to taking the intake manifold off. I missed 2 coolant hoses that go from the engine to the heater. They're they're hiding in the heater section of the ETK ... damn they're pricey: 64218391239 $123.75 64218391240 $63.75 (prices are from pelicanparts) At that price, I'm probably going to cheap out. I'll be sure to follow up to this message in 2 weeks when those hoses burst ;) My knock sensors looked okay, but I did all the work to get there, so I had to swap them out :) -- Adam Lazur

I wonder if you got the wrong ones. realoem is mislabeled for dual zone climate control. I think I paid $9, $9 and $12 for the 3 small hoses in my case. Thanks, Mark

You made me run out to the car and pull one to read the part number off of it. The ETK was indeed wrong, here are the PN's for the hoses I pulled: 64211394291 $7.25 64211394291 $11.50 Much more reasonable. I don't think I'll be able to cheap out on these hoses anymore :) -- Adam Lazur

What you weren't paying attention Adam? ;-) Using the ETK you have to use a 328i for it to spit out the correct numbers. Carlos 98 M3
