#1. Alternator squeal - from Peter Fanning

Date: Sun, 02 Dec 2007 13:59:51 -0800 From: Peter Fanning <pbfanning@comcast.net> Subject: Alternator squeal The alternator on our ~130k mile 98 M3/4 is starting to squeal. Noisy when cold, better but not gone when warm. I've replaced the other pulleys in the past. Is the alternator pulley replaceable and/or is the noise likely the alternator itself? TIA, Peter Fanning

#4. Electric Fan....which one? - from Jeff Conner

All, The removal of the A/C from the Track Car (95) has facilitated me getting an electric puller fan to keep the engine from overheating while idling in the hot pits, waiting at stoplights, or just sitting in the rare (but still happens) bout of stop & go traffic. Bimmerworld offers up two 16" varieties - straight blades @ 1300cfm and curved blades @ 2000+cfm. Is there a specific reason to spend the extra money on the curved bladed fan (2x) on a car that will very rarely see low speed/idling conditions? Hi, Not to restate the obvious but the CFM required should drive the decision. At 2000+ CFM I'd say you would have it covered. Will the 1300 CFM fan provide enough airflow? What will the stock fan do? 1300 CFM is quite a bit of air and it might just do if you think sitting still will be a rare occurrence. I heard someplace that straight fan blades are more efficient than curved ones, but curved ones create less noise for the same CFM rating. That's what I recall from some place, can anyone confirm this? I did a quick 30sec Google search and found only a little information backing this up. -----Original Message----- From: Jeff Conner [mailto:jeff.conner@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, December 05, 2007 5:23 PM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] Electric Fan....which one? I have the curved blade 2000+CFM puller on my 97 m3 track car, works great. This is the one you want (I have removed my aux fan/assembly and my pulley fan, upgraded radiator, added oil cooler, etc, and my temps are just fine in the pits). The more cautious folks always warned me though, back when I was also driving my track car on the streets sometimes, that it would be wise not to remove both of the other two (aux and pulley fan) and just rely on the new puller fan (makes sense to me). Just depends on your application. If its track driven only, the SPAL 16" 2070 CFM is a great solution. Mine is wired up to run on the power of the AUX fan. Hope this helps. -Ben

#10. WTB: Cat-back Exhaust - from Matt Bader

Date: Fri, 7 Dec 2007 12:26:19 -0500 From: "Matt Bader" <mbader@exammaster.com> Subject: WTB: Cat-back Exhaust I am looking for a cat-back exhaust in good condition. I like UUC's Corsa unit, but it is expensive when purchased new. I also like the Stromung. Sounds great on the videos, and is lightweight. Active has a good system but at 34 lbs, is a little heavier than what I am looking for. Rogue's DMS system would also be an option but I don't like the sound of that one as much. It looks like it has good engineering, however. I have my headers and airpump simulator, and am ready to get the cat-back. Tia, Matt Bader 98 M3/4 Delaware
