It may or may not be a primary reason, but I believe it is a very salient reason many would consider a diesel BMW. Where can I find some? I would be interested to see some good 3rd party comparisons as well. I was not able to find out much info about the filters from anyone but the manufacturer, and call me crazy, but I really don't want to just take their word for it. Not to offend, and this is not at all aimed at you Mr. Walsh, but all of the Amsoil fanboys have left such a bad taste in my mouth over the years with the way they carry on that I don't really want to give any money to Amsoil. They are like the Ron Paul of automotive products... Dave

What exactly DOES control the price of diesel fuel? Not the oil company execs do you suppose, for reasons almost totally divorced from cost of buying/making it? I have suspected that high diesel prices are just another way of quietly fattening profits by hitting the truckers, who don't complain as much as gasoline consumers might, and simply pass the cost on to the consumers of whatever the trucks are carrying. Thus we all pay for the fuel costs at the grocery store and WalMart cash registers. There is simply no logical reason for diesel prices to go in ten years (or less) from 30 cents/gallon less than gasoline to 30 cents higher. It has always been cheaper to produce than gasoline....what changed? I bought a new Volvo diesel back when, and it was cheap to run but man was it SLOW! I'd love to own one of the new BMW turbo diesels now if I could afford it. I suspect the engine would last longer than a similar gasoline model and require less maintenance in the long run as well. (Although a turbo could make it a little more prone to higher maintenance than a non-turbo, but I don't know that.) Regards, Bill K

One of my other "cars" is a Chevy Blazer which gets roughly 18 mpg overall. It uses regular gas, which is roughly 10 percent cheaper than premium. My M3, with a number of power upgrades including supercharger still manages 21 MPG overall, and with a heavy foot. So, the differential in gas price does not overcome the better mileage I get on the M3. It is still cheaper to drive. Were the differential as great between regular and premium as it is with gas versus diesel, I wouldn't be able to make that claim. The Dinan stage I kit, with CAI, and not cheap, gives you roughly 20 claimed hp. That is barely noticeable. You have to go to cams upgrade, intake manifold upgrade and/or forced induction to really change the nature of the beast. Software upgrades help, also, but it is not a huge gain in and of itself, at least on the E36. Doing a CAI, or Cat-back exhaust by themselves are not huge gains. Also, getting all systems to work together, such as intake, intake manifold, opening up the exhaust, etc. works best, but is tricky from a tuning point of view. I have the K&N on my 325 and the ITG on my M3. Love the sound but otherwise can't honestly say they improve mileage, performance or anything except a little bling factor. It was fun to shift into second and feel the car buck to the rear and launch forward. The car (in stock trim) ran very good and pulled well into the 6k rpm range in every gear. I removed the baffle in the airbox and the car sounded slightly different but I did not notice anything else except my mileage went up by 2 -3 mpg while on trips. I did not install the replacement airfilter and intake ducting. If I had I could speak more about what you asked. However, after driving the car for a year (at that point) I purchased the Conforti kit. I got the Air filter, intake ducting, splash guard, Euro HFM and the chip. Best money I've ever spent on any car I've owned. I have chipped Camaros and other cars but have not obtained this level of improvement. This kit turned the my quiet storm into a totally different car. Now I never dynoed this car but four of my friends that I previously ran and stuck next to were shocked when I ran them again. I gained no less than four car lengths. The top end pulled well into the 7k rpm mark. The fun factor was immense ! Thank you Jim Conforti for a product that I would buy again in a heart beat. The car idles even better now with the A/C on. Before it was kinda rough at idle with it blowing. Although, my mileage has gone down to around 21 - I have to blame it on me. I simply can not drive the car normally. The intake sound is a rude awakening to anyone in ear shot. It actually scared my girlfriend when I jumped on it with her in the car the first time after installation. She had her window down at the time. The look on her face was priceless.....followed by a whoo - hoo ! Ok, its the only car that she has been in that runs the 1/4 mile in under 18 seconds. Anyway, my friends rushed to the store and purchased kits for their cars but did not receive the increase that I did. :) -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: Bill and Jan Klemme <wklemme@gmail.com> > Date: Sat, 29 Dec 2007 04:03:40 -0500 > From: Bill and Jan Klemme <wklemme@gmail.com> > Subject: Re: [E36M3] Euro intake ITG filter > > OK guys, I'm still a newbie on M3 mods.
