#1.Euro headers and track pipes - from Kirk

Date: Tue, 8 Jan 2008 22:12:23 -0800 From: "Kirk" <admranger@earthlink.net> Subject: <FS> Euro headers and track pipes Ok, since Matt's post extolled the virtues of the Euro headers, I figured I'd pile on by putting mine up for sale. While my set has been jet-hot coated, they are, unfortunately, not pristine (long ebay story there...don't ask). Basically, my set will work best w/an OBDI car, as the track pipes have the O2 sensor bung in them and the header pipes have been (cringe) cut. No muffler, just the headers and the midpipes. You will need to get this welded together or connectors put on the pipes as the previous owner took the sawzall out to 'disconnect' the system. I'd like $425 plus shipping from 89144 (actual costs). I have pics if you are interested (email me directly please). One thing I have learned from this experience is that the Euro M3 head must have had *massive* exhaust ports as the headers certainly have gigantic ports. The area has to be at least 150 percent of stock. These will bolt up to M50 variants too. If you are OBDII, you'll need to weld in an O2 bung somewhere closer to your stock location though. Definitely not a plug and play kit, hence the price. Cheers, Kirk Lachman Sin City Chapter '95 M3 (w/2.8 motor now) #21 JP in process (it still looks like a car blew up in my garage...)

The second bung does need to be welded, but preferably not until after you remove the stock system and put the header up there to check for clearances and best placement. The flange on the euro header does not match the stock flange on the stock midpipe, but it sounds like this is not an issue here since Kirk is selling the midpipe as well. Headers look good in the engine bay, some bling bling comes with them. #3. Emissions testing...lol - from Richard Sperry

Date: Wed, 9 Jan 2008 08:13:38 -0500 From: "Richard Sperry" <richardsperry@comcast.net> Subject: Emissions testing...lol I went to get the old girl tested yesterday too. In Maryland OBD1 cars do the treadmill test on rollers. I pulled right up, and handed the really young guy the notice, paid the $14 fee, and went to the waiting area... The kid looks for the cats with the bomb inspection mirror, checks the gas cap, and then looks at the wheels. He scratchs his head, get on his knees, stands up, more scratching... Hummmm. I ask him if there is a problem, and he says, no... But he heads off to find the manager. Well a 60 year old lady comes over gets on here knees, (man that sounds a lot weirder than it was...lol), and shakes her head no, no... The kid comes into the waiting area, and asks me to back the car out of the lane. What??? He says that my car is too low to make it over the rollers and that I will be exempt from testing. I tell him that the car has had the same springs and shocks for the last 8 years (4 tests, H&R OE sport spring, Koni's) and never had a problem. He says that the manager doesn't want to take the risk, and that's that! I go to the office, and they hand me an exemption, and REFUND the test fee. Cool nice lunch refund... So I guess I'll never know if the VF Supercharger will actually pass...

The previous time I went into the inspection lane two years ago, my horn wasn't working (and after the dealer replaced the slip ring). Turns out the young guy in the inspection lane had just purchased an E36 M3. So, he admired my car, I explained about the horn, and he let me pass. On this week's inspection, they didn't even bother to check to see if I was running cats. Could have gone through with track pipes, but you never know. Richard, what kind of whp are you running with the VF unit? I believe folks using that system have been waiting for an upgrade but not sure if they ever came out with one. It is supposed to be nice from an engineering point of view. In PA, not every county has emissions testing, but the counties around Philly do. Between the emissions and inspection fees, it's usually $50-$80. EVERY YEAR. Imagine my joy at forking over $80 for them to tell me that my 135k mile Miata with the original cat passed emissions with flying colors, nowhere near the limit. Thanks. Even OBDII cars, like my M3 and Legacy GT, get charged a bunch. Most of the fee comes from the state, but at least just about every shop and dealer can do the inspections and testing, no special state emissions places. Hmm, that came off a bit more rant-like than I wanted... #6. steering wheel removal - from Tom Yee

Date: Wed, 9 Jan 2008 09:29:57 -0500 From: Tom Yee <tomgsr@hotmail.com> Subject: steering wheel removal Hi, group, Regarding my '97 M3/4, I have a little squeak from the steering wheel, just off center to the left, that began recently. Turning the wheel to make a left (big radius) turn creates the squeak at a specific angle of the steering wheel. I tried to lubricate the u-joint knuckle under the hood (steering shaft), but that didn't affect anything. Has anyone removed the steering wheel to lubricate the horn contact ring, and what is the proper procedure with the airbag wheel? Some people disconnect the battery or remove the fuse for the airbags before attempting it. I have always just removed it without doing either. Its got a solid connection that I personally dont feel it would go off. Thats possibly just me taking my chances. Regardless, theres two holes on the back of the steering wheel on either side. Inside theres some hex bolts. I forget what size off the top of my head(someone else can chime in). Once you loosen those two bolts, the airbag basically falls off the steering wheel. Just disconnect it from the rest via connecting wire. Simple. I'm assuming they're tugging on the connector and tripping it since it resets OK. If you have a stock seat that sensor mat sits in a pretty rigid tray. What are you doing in that seat to "wear out" the part? Not a tough part to replace, though a little fiddly to get the contact cement off and pull it out. You need to remove the allen screws on the plastic around the bottom of the seat and pry up the cushion to get at the pad. You'll also need to clip some wire ties to remove the wiring IIRC.
