#1. RE: [E36M3] airbag sensor; OT factory harness replacement - from Matt Bader

It looks like the factory harness is pretty well integrated into the stock seats, particularly in terms of the belt tensioner mechanism. I have the Schroth's but they are designed to use the factory connectors (on one side of the seat, anyway) and tensioner system. So, I am wondering what I am going to do about the belts when I replace my heavy stock seats eventually. Can't remember if I already asked this question... I'm assuming they're tugging on the connector and tripping it since it resets OK. If you have a stock seat that sensor mat sits in a pretty rigid tray. What are you doing in that seat to "wear out" the part? Not a tough part to replace, though a little fiddly to get the contact cement off and pull it out. You need to remove the allen screws on the plastic around the bottom of the seat and pry up the cushion to get at the pad. You'll also need to clip some wire ties to remove the wiring IIRC. I'm going to venture to guess that it is the lower bearing in the column that is creating the noise. Create a looong lubrication rattle can straw extension and soak the lower bearing, from under the car, with white lithium grease - your 'mouse' should go away. -------------------- 6 -------------------- Date: Wed, 9 Jan 2008 09:29:57 -0500 From: Tom Yee <tomgsr@hotmail.com> Subject: steering wheel removal Hi, group, Regarding my '97 M3/4, I have a little squeak from the steering wheel, just off center to the left, that began recently. Turning the wheel to make a left (big radius) turn creates the squeak at a specific angle of the steering wheel. I tried to lubricate the u-joint knuckle under the hood (steering shaft), but that didn't affect anything. Has anyone removed the steering wheel to lubricate the horn contact ring, and what is the proper procedure with the airbag wheel? Regards, Tom Yee

I would disconnect the battery, there are capicators in the system, and you really don't want it to go off in your hands. There is a special copper anti seize, used on the slip ring, (go figure dealer says it a 5# tub and 100's of $) I talked to the lead mechaic and he just gave me a dab. Make sure you mark where the wheel lines up on the splines if you are going to remove the wheel. Nothing worse than putting it back together and then finding it's cocked...and doing it again... Arghhhhh...

#4. What's my TC Kline 4 point bolt in rollbar worth? - from Jonathan Sargent

I'm thinking $600 and have read over and over that it was the best bolt in 4 point ever made for the E36M3 Coupe. It certainly was a stellar fit and well made piece. Any thoughts or previous experience buying or selling this piece? I went with a Robinson Racing 8 point weld in and they did a fantastic job for anyone in the Atlanta area needing custom work. FWIW, you can find copper anti-seize at any decent auto parts store. The anti-seize needs to have copper in it to act as an electrical conductor - the plain-gray anti-seize won't do. Jim Bassett

FWIW McMahan who built these way back when charges about that (perhaps a bit more) for a new one installed these days. I'd lower the price a bit. You add a mounting point on the outside of each front seat next to the existing belt anchors, the other side mounts into the stock female ends, you mount a female end to the back seat anchor on the passenger side, and then the drivers side anchors to the existing seat belt anchors located on the driver's side rear seat. They have the ASM device, and are supposed to be DOT approved, etc. These are designed to work specifically with stock seats, including the stock belt tensioner system. I have them on my car, but haven't had a chance to test them in real-world driving situations (e.g. autox or HPDE) since I just installed them recently. Date: Wed, 9 Jan 2008 14:47:37 -0800 (PST) From: Scott McClung <smlists@pacbell.net> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Harness bar? Harness bars are generally not very safe - IMHO. Maybe OK for low speed autox, but I personally would not trust one for a high speed track event. In a roll-over situation if the roof section is collapsed at all there is no support for the harness rendering it basically useless. Stock safety system or a 4 or 6 point roll bar w/ harness bar is the minimum I personally will accept as safety equipment. Of course, I much prefer a full cage w/ NASCAR door bars like in my race car. The 4-point harness mentioned below might be acceptable, but before using it I would get the opinion of someone more knowlegable in racing safety equipment. Does anybody here have a used one laying around (or new) that aren't using & that would like to sell? Freaking cops in this area have nothing better to do than give tickets for not having a front plate. Anybody needs a regular E36 front tag holder?
