Hey all, Some interesting E36 news over on SCCAforums: Should the E46 M3 be let into STU? http://sccaforums.com/forums/thread/283204.aspx Should the E36 M3 be let into STX? http://sccaforums.com/forums/1/283407/ShowThread.aspx I'm arguing strongly "yes" in both cases. Or at least there should be, has been one on ever S/M/50/52 I've seen. Rear of motor is a nice cast round hole. IIRC its on the passenger side diagonally from the one I mentioned above. #6. was squeaking steering, now no horn - from Tom Yee
Top
Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2008 14:52:52 -0500 From: Tom Yee <tomgsr@hotmail.com> Subject: was squeaking steering, now no horn Hello, gruppe, You may recall that I had asked for suggestions on ridding my 98 M3/4 of an annoying squeak when turning the steering wheel. Many suggested lubricating the lower bushing just forward of the firewall. I tried this with WD-40 (without success and with some admonitions that it is not a true lubricant) followed by a teflon-infused lubricant, to no avail. I finally decided to remove the steering wheel to try to check the upper bushing and slip ring.. I pushed a lithium grease around the steering shaft and bushing, trying to get enough between the bushing and shaft. I cleaned the slip ring contact on the back of the steering wheel, then put a silicone based grease on it. When I reassembled the wheel and airbag, I discovered that the horn no longer worked (I don't use the horn very frequently, but last time I 'tested' it, it worked fine). I took everything back apart to see if I missed something but couldn't find/didn't notice anything amiss. I reassembled the wheel and airbag once again. Still the horn does not work. I looked at the fuse (#8, 15 amps), which seems fine. Can anyone suggest a fix for the new issue? Good news: the steering is quiet. Bad news: won't pass inspection without a functioning horn (have a few months, though, to cure). Thanks for your help, past and current! There are threads in the archive that list the specific part numbers. -Pete On Feb 4, 2008 2:39 PM, Tom Yee <tomgsr@hotmail.com> wrote: > Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2008 14:52:52 -0500 > From: Tom Yee <tomgsr@hotmail.com> > Subject: was squeaking steering, now no horn > > > Hello, gruppe, > > You may recall that I had asked for suggestions on ridding my 98 M3/4 of > an annoying squeak when turning the steering wheel. Date: Mon, 04 Feb 2008 18:59:09 -0500 From: Andrej Dolenc <adolenc@verizon.net> Subject: Re: [E36M3] was squeaking steering, now no horn I just got my car back from the mechanic on friday, it had all kinds of steering issues. One of which was the squeaking steering wheel. A squeak I can deal with, when the steering wheel gets hard to turn and you have to force it to unwind, that's less than optimal. A lot of people have mentioned the U joint to lube, that's one of the parts that was seizing up on mine. The other was the lower bearing that supports the steering shaft itself. But while he was in there, he did see that the airbag clockspring was fairly dirty. He was saying that the source of the squeak was that part right there. He cleaned that up, now the car is back to steering like normal and silent. At least from the steering wheel squeak! Hope that helps, Andrej '97 M3 Tom Yee wrote: > Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2008 14:52:52 -0500 > From: Tom Yee <tomgsr@hotmail.com> > Subject: was squeaking steering, now no horn > > > Hello, gruppe, > > You may recall that I had asked for suggestions on ridding my 98 M3/4 of an annoying squeak when turning the steering wheel. #10. Update on Interior Stripping - from kresener@aol.com
Top
Date: Wed, 06 Feb 2008 21:43:39 -0500 From: kresener@aol.com Subject: Update on Interior Stripping Thought I'd give an update on my project: I've got the rear seats, front seats, center console, both front kickplates, and all of the carpet out of the car and all in one great big pile on my garage floor.? Carpet was not too difficult to get out, as long as the razor knife was new and sharp.? Hardest part was getting the carpet out from under the center stack, but with some careful cutting and brute strength I was able to rip it out.? The sound deadening material is coming off fairly easily as well, I just have the passenger footwell left to do, which will take maybe an hour.? Then the fun part of using goo-gone or something like that to wipe the residue off the floor so that there's a clean surface to paint.? I'm looking forward to the fumes and resultant buzz.? I found a place on the web that mixes custom spray paint cans to match any car's color, they had Avus Blue in their listing so for $12 a can I should be able to get the inside looking pretty spiffy and consistently painted. One thing I was amazed to see was how thick the carpet and padding was in the footwells, about an inch and a half or maybe two inches think.? This has me wondering if I'll have to adjust how my feet work the pedals since they'll be resting so much lower on the floor. So far I'm planning on leaving the door panels in place so it's not so ratty looking, if someone knows where I can get some lightweight aluminum panels for them so it looks cleaner I'd take them out. Once I have all the sound deadening material out I plan to weigh everything I've taken out and will report back what it all weighed.? I'm guessing 125 pounds or so.? It's been a heck of a lot easier and succesful than my diet!
