At least I don't think they're made for lifting the engine. You have to lift the motor a few inches as opposed to just supporting it from the top in it's original position. I've used a board on the oil pan to distribute the load and pushed the motor up with a floor jack. I've done that twice on the M3 and twice on the 540. Not saying that's the proper way but it works fine. The oil pans are pretty strong. Be sure to keep an eye on and disconnect some of the things that may get scrunched or stretched. e.g. the alternator cooling duct and the clutch fan guard. marty On Feb 19, 2008, at 7:49 AM, Doug wrote: > You can pick up an engine brace at northern tool for about $50. > Easy to use and you can use it for clutch jobs too.

I'm not exactly sure how you would use this for a clutch job assuming you'd be suspending the rear of the motor vs the front. I say this because with all the baggage it towers about a foot over the engine and in the rear it would very likely interfere with the hood unless you removed it. If you can move it midway and tilt the brace, sure it would probably work. I can't stress enough putting washers between where the fender gusset and fender frame rail gap. If you don't do this, the weight of the motor will collapse and deform an otherwise prefect fender. If you can rest the brace feet on the fender bolt heads then no worries. Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2008 09:09:26 -0500 (EST) From: "Stefano G" <stefanoale@excite.com> Subject: Koni vs. Bilstein I second Tim's opinion: reinforcements and coilovers. The chassis of e36s are getting old and are not designed for track usage (especially with race tires/suspension) so reinforcements is the first area that needs attention. The stock suspension will leave you wishing for more stiffness on the track but it's fine with street tires. You need a much stiffer suspension if you plan on using race tires or you'll feel like you are driving an old Buick (ok I exaggerate but you know what I mean). Also make sure to switch to synth oil if you have not already and keep an eye on the cooling system (if you have the original radiator you may want to look into a replacement soon as it's a weak point the track will only make worse). Other than that the car is really sweet on the track so enjoy it! Stefano '98 M3 -------------------- ?I am?going to replace the shocks on my 98 with 65K miles and am deciding between Bilstein and Koni.? I plan to take my car to track events (I just sold my previous track car), so I am also going to install rear shock mount reinforcements and front camber plates.? I am planning to keep the original M3 springs.?? I know that both shock setups are good, but I also want the car to be as comfortable as possible for street use.?? Any thoughts on the differences between these two shocks???? Also, am I missing something by not replacing the springs as well??? I would think that the M3 springs are pretty good and other than lowering the car, there would not be a great advantage to switching them. Also, what other reinforcement type mods in addition to the shock mounts are good to do to prevent problems?? I left my motor supported by the brace for two weeks when I pulled the front subframe and oilpan last year. As far as the clutch job goes, it is much easier to put the tranny back in if you lift the front of the engine to tilt the back of the motor down. It just creates a better angle of attack for the tranny to slide back in. These should already be installed on your '98 as they were standard from 3/96 production. One question of my own, are these compatible with aftermarket camber plates? For the record and others who wish to install the front reinforcements on earlier cars, the part number is 31 31 2 489 795 for the reinforcement (2 per car) and 31 33 1 094 288 for the gasket (2 per car). I would also recommend replacing the lock nuts that hold the strut bearing to the body 31 33 1 092 887 (6 per car). While you are in there, check the condition of your upper strut mount bearings. There is not a lot of grease present as delivered from the factory so I usually clean them thoroughly and re-pack with a good high temp wheel bearing grease. If you want cheap added neg. camber I think you can swap the upper strut mounts L to R on all '96 and later cars (experts chime in if I am incorrect). The Bilstein/Koni debate is like debating tire choice. I did not need the shocks/struts to be adjustable so I went with Bilsteins all around and tightened things up just a bit with Eibach Pro-Kit springs. I would not call the car plush...it is an M3 after all...but it is not too bad in day to day driving.
