No SRS lights on my M3 and I haven't touched the cluster or the wiring. :-)" I'm glad you brought that up; I've removed the passenger airbag, and removed that box to clean and paint the interior and was wondering if I should put it back in. Did you just leave the connector and wires hanging, I'd like to remove the wiring for aesthetic purposes, does anyone have any suggestions on how best to trace the wires back to somewhere they can be disconnected without hacking them up? Is the Amsoil 20w50 in spec for 75+* track events? I typicall use their 5w40 "European" oil and I have a membership so I can get reasonable pricing. Not looking to start a oil war, just checking to see if someone knows the specs better than I.

In general, yes a thicker oil will hold up better for repeated track use. Back in the day on this list Bob Stommel (Bimwad Bob) rec'd Mobil 1 15W50 for track use. His assertion was that anything else turned into "hamster p*ss" under track conditions. I can't get the archive search to work at the moment, but I have it in my home archives, if you're interested in reading it (it is a few years old now, though). I found my car burns up the thinner oils at about 1qt per 1000-1500 miles. This is greatly reduced (though not eliminated) with the 15w-50. I"ve never been a huge fan of Mobil 1 although I used to used it years ago. Now, unless I'm mistaken, there is no truly synthetic Mobil 1 in existance. I'd be looking to run an ester based synthetic especially for track use. For heavy track use, find one that is low on detergents such as Red Line. I have switched over completely, in my DD/occasional track use BMW's, to Elf (now changing names to Total) synthetic. Right now I still am running Red Line race oil in the M3 but I may switch that over as well. The other option that I would consider is Motul. I also would not run an oil any thicker than necessary. Well I suppose if your oil consumption is significantly higher with thinner oil but that is likely pointing to a problem that isn't going to get any better. Cheers. Jack Money

Working now, here's Bob's post - which was pulled from a reply of mine in 2006, to of all people, Gus(!) :-) Bob's original was from 1998, and the archives don't seem to back that far. (So, it's almost a decade old, and I know that Mobil 1 has changed formulations over the years, so I make no claims to it's validity. Although for the time being I still run M1 15W50 in both cars.) Without further ado: ------------- Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 13:58:02 -0500 From: Bob Stommel Subject: [E36M3] Oil rules for M-cars Discussions of oil brands and weights is kind of like discussions of religion. Everyone has their favorite and it's usually gonna take a lot to change their minds. FWIW, here are my personal "oil rules for M-cars": Winter weather: BMW 5W40 synthetic or Mobil 1 10W30 (this is for street only and assumes you're not going to do any track events or autocrosses in the winter) Spring, summer and early fall weather: BMW 5W40 synthetic or Mobil 1 15W50 (again for street) For ANY track event: Mobil 1 15W50 -- that's right, just one. I won't bore everyone with all the reasons I no longer use Valvoline, BMW, Castrol, Redline, Amsoil, Purple People Eater, or any other oil on the track. The viscosity rating is simple -- anything thinner than 50-weight on the track is gonna turn into hamster piss after a few hot runs. Just compare any 40-weight oil at the end of a driver school session with Mobil 1 15W50 after a similar session and you'll see what I mean. And don't forget to add an extra quart of oil for any track or autocross event (total of 8 quarts). The E36 M3 oil pan will actually hold 9 quarts according to PTG, so the extra quart isn't gonna blow your engine seals, bunky. It WILL reduce the valve lifter noise though.
