I guess that would mean I have first hand experience and I have never run a BMW limited slip differential with the wrong fluid nor have I worked on a car that had. Let's see, my differential knowledge is pretty limited, but I'll give this a shot. BMW limited slip differentials work via a clutch pack (at least the ones we are talking about in this thread) and these clutches need proper lubrication with proper friction modifiers to allow these clutches to work properly (to slip/grab as they were designed). If this friction modifier is completely omitted (i.e., standard open differential fluid which doesn't contain any friction modifier), the clutches will lock up more (and have more friction), therefore, the clutches will wear more quickly as they won't be allowed to slip as much particularly when cornering. This is why some of the budget racers use standard open diff fluid (to increase lock-up) and/or add a very limited amount of the friction modifier at the expense of increased wear (as they either don't care about having to rebuild the diff or the diff is on its last legs or they plan to replace or rebuild anyway). I could ask Brett Anderson (www.bmwgears.com) what he thinks, he probably knows a thing or two about limited slip differentials.
