I did, and love them. The top of the shock shaft sticks out much farther so it's easy to get a socket on it. Helpful: drill out the center of the aluminum nut. I used a 5/8" bit on my drill press to remove just enough material to allow an 11mm socket to get in there. You might need to grind down the socket a little bit. And I bet the bearing in the TCK plate is shot, too. It clunks when worn, and PA's roads beat them up pretty badly. Mine clunked a day or 2 after installing new bearings. The Vorshlag bearing is MUCH bigger. Mine click when it's cold, but are much quieter when it's 60 degrees out. -Paul -----Original Message----- From: mdriver13@aol.com [mailto:mdriver13@aol.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 04, 2008 5:35 PM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] clunk front left -- I think Date: Tue, 04 Mar 2008 17:31:43 -0500 From: mdriver13@aol.com Subject: clunk front left -- I think Guys, Okay, interesting that the temps are going up here in eastern PA and now I've noticed a clunk coming from what I believe to be?the front left corner.? Really noticeable noise in a parking lot, at slow speeds over small bumps.? Also think I feel it through the steering wheel too.? Just had TCK coilovers put on last fall.? I think it might be the top nut, it's easy to turn -- but?I think?you need to hold the inner 11mm adjuster nut still while you tighten the outer nut.? Right???? I've tried to do just that (I have the home made socket and the long neck 11mm to get down the center hole, but I can't get a good grip on the inner nut because I have the TCK camber plates to with the extra tall grey nut which is making it way to difficult.? Any suggestions from the collective body of good minds here. TIA, Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA 2005/2006 Philly Region BSP Champion Sponsored by WCC & Rogue Engineering

#4. E36M3 Front Wheel Bearing Failures - from Jeff Bjerke

Date: Wed, 5 Mar 2008 0:38:19 -0500 From: Jeff Bjerke <jbjerke@charter.net> Subject: E36M3 Front Wheel Bearing Failures I experienced the same left side failure at the track last summer. Happened to carry a pair of bearings in my spares box. I actually had some bearing balls that were sheared in half. Changed at the track after buying one huge a$$ socket at Tractor Supply. Thought I may as well do both sides, but was informed by a few that their track cars have gone through more than one left side and still on the original right bearing. Decided to keep the other one in the spares box. YMMV, especially if you have any counter clockwise tracks in your area. I had the drivers side wheel bearing fail on the race car this past season (95 E36 M3). Yes, it was making a horrible sound all weekend at the Shenendoah Circuit at summit. When I got home I saw pretty much the same thing that you described. There was still grease in the bearing, but several of the ball bearings were let's say less than round. Just wear and tear on the moving parts (and heat!) I bought 2 just in case, but the passenger side still seems tight. Just make sure that you keep an extra bearing in your tool kit.. The other side will probably start making the sounds of death soon.. Best Mo

I think it might be the top nut, it's easy to turn -- <snipped> I too had this happen with my TCK D/A coilovers--I had a clunk and noticed that the top nut was loose on one side. I called TCK and they told me that it should have been installed with a dab of loctite. They told me to carefully loosen it a bit more, exposing a few threads (with the car on the ground) and then put a few drops of red Loctite on it and hand tighten it with a box wrench until I could see the shaft just begin to turn. They told me that this would hold it in place but that the nut would still be removable with a quick blast of an impact gun. I suggest you call TCK to verify, but it worked for me. Hi Mo, the PA guys seem a lot more reasonable as the NY folks charge a $50 yearly membership fee (no freebies) and $25 /race (~9 minutes) no discounts. BUT... It's 20 mins from my house... Cheers Stefano '98 M3 which may soon be replaced by a kart (at least as far as racing - for those who remember I have been thinking about this for a while but I'm ready to pull the trigger this year! In terms of the NorCal tracks I drive, they are: THill: usually CCW I/SP: always CW LS: always CCW BW: either way, depending on the day. I did replace both anyway ... thanks for the feedback. I'm still surprised by the split ball bearings -- had never seen that before, first-hand. --Andrew >Date: Wed, 5 Mar 2008 0:38:19 -0500 >From: Jeff Bjerke <jbjerke@charter.net> >Subject: E36M3 Front Wheel Bearing Failures > >I experienced the same left side failure at the track last summer. >Happened to carry a pair of bearings in my spares box. #8.E36 Front Koni DA struts w/stock spring perch - from Kirk Lachman

Struts were rebuilt last season so they have about 6 track events on them (will go up by one more this weekend). These were uber rare at one point. Not sure if anyone runs stock class autocross or just wants to go back to a more kidney saving spring rate (like H&R sport springs). These would be your ticket to having flexibility to run autocross, track, and drive on the street. Cheers, Kirk Lachman Sin City Chapter '95 M2.8 #21 JP

#10. Auto-x tire pressure follow-up - from Russel DeArman
Top
Date: Wed, 5 Mar 2008 14:19:03 -0800 (PST) From: Russel DeArman <russde_93@yahoo.com> Subject: Auto-x tire pressure follow-up Ok, so the event was on Saturday. Background: Stock '98 M3 sedan, staggered DS2's, 225-45 Hankook RS-2's in front and 245-40 Dunlop FM-901's in the rear. Front H&R bar set to full stiff. I ran 42 in the front and 36 in the rear. Keep in mind I'm a novice: the car felt great. White polish in the front showed very little roll-over on the Hankooks and grip was terrific. Next question: how do I fine-tune the pressures? do I need to use a pyrometer? since the only thing I can adjust is the pressure, is this worth the effort? My gut reaction is to adjust and drive again, but since my times steadily decrease with each run I don't think I'd actually prove anything. Alignment: When I had the front tires installed I had an alignment at the same time. Front: Camber was pretty poor: -0.5 and -0.3 Caster is 7.4 and 7.2 Toe is -0.02 on each side for a -0.04 total (all measurements are in degrees) <Should I think about crash bolts? Since I'm running BS that's my only option to get any more camber, right?> Rear: Camber is -0.9 and -1.0 Toe is 0.00 and -0.02, total is 0.02 Any thoughts on these specs? Any other things to do to improve the car as afar as adjustment? I know the biggest decrease in times will come from ME, not the car, but I can't help but try other stuff. Thanks, Russ --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.
