#2. CHMSL Options? - from Neil Maller

Date: Wed, 12 Mar 2008 17:23:37 -0400 From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> Subject: CHMSL Options? I have a LTW replica wing (with risers) ready to be painted and installed, replacing my stock M3 rear wing/picnic table. However unlike the LTW part, the new one has no CHMSL (3rd brake light). I'd just as soon have the CHMSL, if for no other reason than that without it the OBC nanny is going to bitch and moan at me, so for small money I've bought a take-off stock parcel shelf CHMSL. With the roll bar this is going to be so much fun to install... My question is this: is anyone familiar with the CHMSL wiring? Obviously the old wing version goes through the trunk lid harness, and removal shouldn't be any big deal. But does anyone know where the parcel shelf version plugs in? Is there a connector for it up there someplace? Yeah, I know that the cool thing would be to rout out the new wing to install an LED strip and concealed wiring, then fill, sand and paint. But frankly that kind of handiwork is way above my pay grade, so the parcel shelf version seems like my best option. Ask me how I know :-) Experience has taught me to pull the plug on the engine block before opening any other part of the system. Keeps the flow under control. Yep...1st one I had would leak right through the middle of the casting. Crappy casting on many of them. When I get around to it I will swap to one of the new plastic ones. Dave

Hi, Not sure what radiator you want but for $700 it better be an all aluminum one. On the other hand I picked up an overstock BEHR radiator for $150 including the shipping from Bimmerzone a couple of years ago. Even with price changes I'm sure you can find one for around that price. I'm using the T-stat kit from BavAuto. No issues with the aluminum housing. I suggest doing the belts and pulleys while you have it apart. I also went with Samco replacement hoses, so I never have to worry. Cost more than stock but worth it. In my driveway, it took about 2.5 hours to complete the job. Much less than $1k even after buying Samco hoses, pulleys and belts. YMMV Kent On Mar 12, 2008, at 1:34 PM, Bill and Jan Klemme wrote: > Date: Wed, 12 Mar 2008 16:26:56 -0400 > From: Bill and Jan Klemme <wklemme@gmail.com> > Subject: aluminum TS housing junk? > > Today when calling a (BMW specialty) shop about having my cooling > system done, I asked if they used the aluminum thermostat housing > and the guy said no, they went back to the OEM part because they've > recently had 4 cars come back with leaks through the housing. Not exactly, on original BMW wheels, the polished version is fully polished on the faces of the spokes, the hub and lip and all of it is clear coated. While being an aluminum forged wheel and stronger than the 1995 M3 cast > "M DOUBLE-SPOKE" (STYL.22) they still are softer than other non-BMW > forged wheels. Easily my favorite E36 M3 wheel, there is also a third version of these along with the two mentioned above. Anyone? Regards, Rich

Spend countless hours modifying fiberglass or do something else. I'm leaning towards the fiberglass modification as I'm not a big fan of the 95 M3s that still have the stock CHMSL and have a rear wing from a 96+ M3. Doesn't look right. If you look closely at a LTW you can see PTG or whomever went the modified fiberglass route. It doesn't quite have a factory look so I'm encouraged by that. :-) Anywhoo, you could take the stock wiring and fish it into the rear parcel shelf, I believe that will be the simplest solution. Cheers, Carlos 98 M3 97 540i/6
