So...am I really the only person on this list that has had a bad aluminum t-stat housing? I know they don't have a super high failure rate but I figure that at least one or two others would have replaced one. In fact, yesterday I was checking out the one that is on my car now, and I can see a little blue spot right in the middle of the front of the housing, right where my first one leaked. None of you get any odd weeping out of these housings? And I don't mean around the edge...I mean right out of the middle of the casting... Also, I could have sworn that at least one very well respected BMW wrench commented on the UUC list that they also quit using 'em in their shop due to a high failure rate. Dave

I thought I read somewhere that the tool that casts these parts was being blamed. It's gotten worn out and now the castings are too thing probably where yours is leaking. I've had mine in my car for years with no problems. I have one for sale with a threaded hole for a 1/8 NPT sender in it for installing gauges in the car. Anyone interested in it? Carlos. 98 M3

What's the deal with the plastic ones? I just took a peak at mine and I actually have the plastic one! Though it looks pretty new so I suspect the previous owner had it swamped out (will need to check the receipts). I know the plastic necks on the radiators are bad. I know the old water pump with the bad propellers. But what was the deal with the TS housing? (Sorry, I forgot -- old age.) Thanks! ________________________________________________ Message sent using UebiMiau 2.7.10

Date: Sat, 15 Mar 2008 10:31:05 EDT From: Mdriver13@aol.com Subject: radiator and stuff... Group, With all this talk about TS housings, radiators, and stuff wasn't there a 'fix' for the plastic rad that used a metal sleeve inserted inside the plastic neck to add rigidity? Or, was I dreaming? Is it still the common rule of thumb to replace the rad at approx. 70K miles? cheers, Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA 2005 / 2006 Philly Region BSP Champion Sponsored by Wheel Collision Center & Rogue Engineering **************It's Tax Time! My car has almost 150K miles on the original radiator, which will soon be replaced but not because it has a noticeable leak. I AM losing a little coolant somewhere, but even if it is the rad it has served me well. As for the aluminum housings, wouldn't you think there was more than one source for those things, and only one of them caused problems? Do we have any clues on those that failed...like a casting mark that says "FOMOCO"? Well, I looked for my old 'piece-o-shit' aluminum TS housing and I can't find it. I never throw anything away - even found the 'old' plastic TS housing (still good, only had 40K on it). I think it had "Malaysia" or something like that stamped on it. Can't quite recall. I'll take a better look around later.
