But, lack of time and expertise means the BMW performance shop gets my business on this one. If anyone has a good recommendation on a streetable set, I would appreciate it. Bavarian Autosport has a "streetable" performance bushing package advertised in its Spring 08 catalog that is a mixture of polyurethane/polyester. If you replace with urethane bushings you can do the whole job in under an hour. To put factory rubber ones back in... I've used a generic balljoint tool for domestic cars that Autozone let out for free (with deposit) but if you don't have one nearby a threaded rod + creative use of pipe/sockets/oil filter wrench/steel plate etc is annoying to do but effective. Plan to make about 3 trips to the hardware store though and probably to swear quite a bit. At least the RTAB's are smaller (like half the size). Thanks, Mark

Seriously, I'm not being snarky -- it took me more than an hour of drilling, cursing, sawzalling, cursing, swearing, and cursing to get the old bushing out first time I tried. The second side was much better -- only 30 minutes. If I had to do the job again, I would DEFINITELY use a tool. Rob: if you're a talentless hack mechanic like me, one option is to buy the VPD tool, use it for the job, and then re-sell here or on ebay/bimmerforums/etc. If I knew then what I know now, that's what I'd do. #6. Carbon Build Up - from Foley, Brian

Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2008 11:03:42 -0400 From: "Foley, Brian" <bfoley@cmpd.org> Subject: Carbon Build Up I am continuing to have a problem with my '97 throwing a CEL related to the Secondary Air System. I have now replaced all components of this system except for the piping that routes air to the exhaust manifold itself from the pump. I have replaced the 02 sensors pre-cat and less than a week later the code returned for "secondary air flow too low, cylinders 4-6". I have been reading about a similar problem with the V8 powered E39 M5s developing carbon buildup in the Secondary Air System that has required heads to be removed and labor costs up into the thousand dollar region. Has anyone had a similar problem or am I the only one? I'm at my wits end here; anyone have any ideas about what I need to do? Please help! B.Foley Charlotte

They seem to have shut their doors for good. (??) This may have happened a while ago, and maybe I just never noticed, but it seems such a shame, as they had a pretty cool list of items for sale. Does anyone have any other source for a Koni adjustment tool that is a slim- fit in order to get to the knob on cars that run a lot of caster, thereby making the plastic tool useless?
