It sounds like the power steering hoses are going to be an item that gets added to the 'need to check' list - 2 weekends ago a fellow autocrosser in the DC area lost power steering at an autocross. Haven't had a chance to find out the details of what & how, but with this many reports of it, I'll be checking mine. Can somebody point me in the right direction in the engine bay? Andrej '97 M3

No explosions, no oil slicks, not even any blinkenlights. (What use is this James Bond endorsement anyway?) This is a common feature on most 4 doors vehicles. There is no corresponding button on the right side. The button deactivates the window switches on the rear doors. Somewhere in the manual it mentions this, but not in a logical location. It's a nice feature when you have small children or annoying friends in the rear seats :)

I used to fiddle with them between events but got tired of that and the uncertain toe settings that would result. I currently have them set for max positive caster at -2.5 degrees camber and 1/16" toe-in. Street tires seem to be holding up okay. Kumhos wear evenly at the track. The car has a nice neutral turn-in. I still suck at auto-x but YMMV. ;^) ....ned. The goo is located near a connection between a rubber hose and a metal fitting, on the driver's side of the car, kinda near the radiator. It sounds like I may be heading towards having a full blown problem. Everyone who has replied to the thread so far has had the dealer perform warranty work... my '95 is out of warranty and I try to do all of the work myself. Anyone out there had the experience of doing this job (have a parts list and some basic instructions/experiences?)? Any idea as to how hard the job is and how long it takes? Anyone have an idea what the dealer would charge to do the job? Any information on the job would be greatly appreciated. TIA, Marcus 95 M3 w/ plenty of goodies (including the new fender liners and JTD underpanel I'll be installing tomorrow after work)

Happened to me at an autox last Saturday. Heard some strange groaning noises and the wheel got very heavy (this didn't really help on the slalom section ;-) Came in and saw fluid had squirted everywhere underneath the front of the car and on the driver's side inside front wheel. I had a BMW dealer replace the hose and clamps TWICE before in the last 8000 miles because I had noticed some leaking prior. This time they replaced the hose and the entire reservoir, as leaks were coming from both places. All under warranty. Maybe JTD should develop a lightweight titanium power steering reservoir with upgraded hoses/clamps . . . ;-) John 97 M3/4 with stuffs
